How Up Learn blends AI and human expertise in education

Every EdTech platform seems to be calling itself ‘AI-powered’ right now. We figured it’s worth being completely transparent about where AI shows up at Up Learn and, importantly, where it doesn’t.
Short answer: Yes, we use AI, but it plays a supporting role. We use it to make learning more personalised, improve the quality of our courses and user experience, and give students access to the best technology available. Combined with expertly crafted content and years of learning science expertise, it helps us create a smarter, more effective learning experience.
Up Learn is built by a team of more than 50 humans, putting in 2,000+ collective hours every week to make our courses as good as they can be. Here’s exactly how it all fits together.
The human expertise behind our adaptive learning platform
There’s a lot of AI-generated educational content out there. Courses churned out in minutes, scripts written by bots, animations stitched together from stock libraries. We don’t do that, and we’d like to think it shows.
Since our launch in 2016, each Up Learn course has been written, animated, and refined by a permanent team of 15+ content developers and learning executives. They spend their days working on anything from writing scripts and quizzes to designing video animations to sweating the details of how a concept is explained in a particular lesson.
Here’s a snapshot of the humans behind the product:
- Learning executives: Subject matter experts that author scripts that break down complex topics with precision and clarity.
- Animators: Creatives who build characters, diagrams, and scenes that make abstract ideas visual and memorable.
- Human tutors: Real people, many with top A-Level grades at Russell Group universities or ex-teachers with expert knowledge, available to message 24/7.
- Product developers: Five or more developers continuously interview students and improve the platform experience.
- Help Centre team: Members of our Customer Experience team who work on every blog and help article

Our courses are built by experts, with AI used to enhance specific parts of the user experience. We believe AI can be a powerful tool for good in education, but meaningful impact still needs human expertise, judgment, and evidence-based design at their core.
Three ways AI in online learning makes a real difference
We’re not anti-AI. There are three key areas where we’ve found AI makes a real, measurable difference to student outcomes.
Up Bot: Our AI tutor
Up Bot is our AI and human tutoring model. It’s trained directly on Up Learn’s courses and curriculum summaries. That means when a student asks a question at 11pm before an exam, Up Bot isn’t searching the internet for a generic answer, it’s pulling directly from the same material the student is studying.
Critically, Up Bot is designed to guide students towards understanding rather than hand them answers. And if a student needs a human, they can ask at any point to be connected to one of our expert tutors immediately.
In the past year, Up Bot has resolved more than 17,000 student conversations with a 90.7% satisfaction rate.

AI-assisted marking: more accurate, more efficient
Our previous marking model was rule-based, which meant it could reject answers with minor spelling variations or valid alternative phrasings. This resulted in some frustration from students who did actually understand the material.
Now, AI acts as a second marker. If our primary system flags an answer as incorrect, AI reviews it before the student ever sees a result. This has reduced remark requests by 90% which is a 10× improvement in accuracy.
We also use distillation against expert human marks to train our AI, meaning it gets smarter over time, while staying grounded in what our educators actually consider correct. As a bonus, this approach is up to 100× more environmentally efficient than standard AI marking models.
Diagnostic quizzes & smart routing
Our diagnostic quizzes are a core part of how students experience personalised learning, by identifying exactly what they already understand and where they still need support. Rather than forcing every student through the same linear pathway, the system adapts based on demonstrated knowledge, allowing confident students to skip content they’ve already mastered and focus their time where it will have the biggest impact.
Up Learn is something more deliberate than generative AI. Behind the scenes, the quizzes use Bayesian knowledge tracing, a learning science approach that builds a more accurate picture of understanding over time.
Instead of treating answers as simply right or wrong, the system considers factors like question difficulty, consistency, and the likelihood of guessing. Students can then move ahead when mastery is clear, revisit targeted content when gaps are identified, and receive additional questions when understanding is uncertain.

Why human expertise still matters in personalised learning
Free, often fully AI-generated platforms are multiplying fast. For casual learning, some are genuinely useful. But when the stakes are high, like achieving the A Level grades needed for a competitive university place, the difference matters.
AI platforms can generate explanations, but they can’t adapt based on years of learning science research, or provide a human tutor when a student is stuck the night before an exam. They also can’t tell you why a student keeps making the same mistake, or design a pathway specifically built to correct it.
Up Learn’s courses are built around animated video with visuals and voiceover: the format we know, from research, is most effective. But that format only works when it’s done properly, with distractions stripped out, the right moments of humour added in, and every second earning its place. That level of craft and creative judgement is still well beyond what AI can do alone.
Up Learn has been refining its courses since 2016. Our content is built by curriculum experts, tested against real exam outcomes, and continuously improved based on student performance data. When a student uses our platform, they’re learning from content that’s been designed, checked, and guided by humans who know what genuine academic progress actually looks like.
How we embrace AI education without replacing our people
We’re a curious team, and we stay up to date with the best tools available. That means our team members use AI platforms (Google Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT) to work faster and smarter.
These tools assist with things like adjusting scripts, refining images, grammar-checking copy, and tracking performance data from social media. They make our team more effective, but could never replace the expertise, judgement, or creativity that our people bring.
Think of it like a spell-checker for experts. A brilliant educator using an AI tool to tighten their writing is still a brilliant educator. The insight, the pedagogical thinking, the deep subject knowledge: that all comes from the human. AI just helps us express it better, faster.
Ready to see the difference for yourself?
Up Learn is built on the belief that the best learning happens when expert teaching and smart technology work together, not one or the other.
Every lesson, every animation, every quiz, and every tutor response is shaped by a team of people who care about getting it right. The AI we use makes that possible at scale, but the expertise behind it is entirely human.
The best way to understand what that learning experience feels like is to try it. A free trial gives you access to our full course experience across both GCSE Science and A Level subjects, with no payment details required.
