Announcing Up Learn’s Smart Learning Functionality. Making students’ learning experience even better

Up Learn launches its Smart Learning functionality, which harnesses unique learning algorithms to ensure that students receive tailored learning and revision for their A Level subjects. The new technology responds better to how students are learning, allowing them to make faster progress.

Up Learn recognises that there is ‘no one size fits all’ when it comes to education and that every second counts for students and teachers. Building on decades of research into the science of learning and interactive assessment, the Smart Learning functionality provides a host of improvements to the platform. The new, smarter algorithm decides whether students need to complete each activity based on a more sophisticated range of factors, including their performance across a range of questions, and the difficulty of each question.

With more intelligent personalisation, students learn smarter without working harder. As a result of the improvements –  students no longer need to complete the same learning journey regardless of prior attainment. This enables Up Learn to deliver more impact for every student – from A grade students to those who need to learn the subject from scratch. When we surveyed 200 teachers, these were their top two requests for making it easier to set work.

Up Learn’s commitment to Smart Learning and efficiency has been central to the product updates since June 2024. Up Learn’s functionality now includes:

1. Better diagnostic technology

Up Learn has created an improved system for assessing students’ levels of knowledge for a particular area, which is being rolled out across the Up Learn courses over the next few months. This helps analyse students’ current strengths, determining which activities they can skip and which areas require more attention. Users of the OCR Maths, OCR and AQA Chemistry, and AQA Physics courses are already experiencing the benefits of this new technology.

2. Better diagnostic content 

Up Learn is creating new questions to fully realise the benefits of this new diagnostic technology, targeting the areas in which students previously made the slowest progress – especially in Edexcel Maths. This improved quiz content uses assessment theory to test prior skills and knowledge more accurately and efficiently and allows students more opportunities to rectify small slip-ups

3. Improved ‘Strengthen’ functionality

Students can click the ‘Strengthen’ button for each section, to be taken back to activities where they got the greatest number of incorrect answers, or haven’t completed the activities yet. Find out more here.

4. Refresh Knowledge’ to fight the forgetting curve

Refresh Knowledge creates bespoke quizzes that consist of questions students should reattempt, preventing the loss of knowledge and supporting retention longer term. The more students use it, the deeper their knowledge! Find out more here
