What is GCSE Triple Science?

Triple Science (also called Separate Science) means your child studies Biology, Chemistry and Physics as three individual GCSEs, each with its own grade, rather than the double grade awarded in Combined Science. It includes everything covered in Combined Science, plus extra topics and greater depth in each subject.

Triple Science tends to suit students who:

• Enjoy science and want to study it in more depth
• Are considering A Levels or careers such as medicine, engineering, or pharmacy
• Perform consistently well in science at school

Should my child take Triple Science?

Schools usually make this call, based on academic performance, confidence in science and progress so far. It's less common for it to be a fully open family choice, though many schools do ask for a preference when a student is on the border.

A few questions that can help if your child, or the school, is weighing it up:

• Does your child genuinely enjoy science, or find parts of it a struggle?
• Are they likely to continue with science at A Level or beyond?
• Some schools timetable Triple Science within the normal science allocation for top sets, others make it a separate option choice. It's worth checking which applies at your child's school.

If there's any doubt, your child's teachers are best placed to advise. They know their strengths, study habits, and confidence levels.

Foundation and Higher Tier in Triple Science

Triple Science is offered at Foundation Tier (grades 1–5) and Higher Tier (grades 4–9), and schools generally recommend a tier based on class performance and mock results.

One difference from Combined Science that is worth knowing: Combined students sit every paper at the same tier. But Triple sometimes allows tiers to be mixed across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, depending on the school and exam board.
